Chronic Otitis Media Project |

Children often struggle with fluid in their ears. In fact, it is one of the most common reasons children have difficulty hearing. Biofilms are a certain way bacteria can grow to better resist antibiotics. They are often present in chronic infections. We looked at biopsies of adenoids in kids with chronic ear fluid and compared them to kids with adenoid obstruction (no infection). This showed that kids with chronic ear fluid had biofilms present in their adenoids. We also looked a middle ear fluid and it showed the same bacteria. This showed that it is likely that biofilms in adenoid tissue likely play a role in chronic ear fluid. The project won an award as best poster at a national meeting in May 2009. |

About Us | ||
The Lions Hearing Center, founded in 2000, is a non-profit that serves southeastern Michigan by helping the deaf and hard of hearing. We provide hearing screening services to thousands of children and adults each year, provide affordable hearing aids to those in need and help deaf children and their families find resources and support.
We partner with Wayne State University, Michigan Ear Institute and Lions clubs throughout the region to help us deliver our services.
Since 2011 – the Lions Hearing Center has provided over 15 scholarships to deaf students who reside in Michigan. The financial challenges that deaf students have are much higher than a hearing student due to the costs of note takers, interpreters, and special equipment.
